I recently put my hands on Air Jordan 1 so that I could compare the width of Jordan 1 to the width of other popular shoes. After comparing the width of Air Jordan 1 to over 20 other popular shoes, my conclusion was this: Air Jordan 1 shoes have a regular width that is very comparable to the large majority of other popular shoes.
I took side-by-side width comparison photos so you can judge for yourself. To navigate this page you can simply scroll down to see our discussion about the width and depth of the toe box, or you can click on the links just below this paragraph to jump ahead to the side-by-side comparison sizing photos I took comparing AJ1 sizing to other popular shoes:

Does Air Jordan 1 Fit Wide or Narrow?
Air Jordan 1 forefoot width and toe box width is very comparable to the width of other popular retro athletic shoes. Overall, I think the Jordan 1 has a regular width that isn’t too wide or too narrow.
Do Air Jordan 1 Have a Wide Toe Box?
Toe box shape can greatly affect the fit and comfort of a shoe. The Air Jordan 1 toe box has a classic rounded design with a very standard width and depth compared to other types of retro athletic shoes.
For example, here is a photo I took comparing the width of men’s Nike Dunks (on the left) to the width of Air Jordan 1:
As you can see above, the overall shape and width of the toe box is very similar. Also, the Air Jordan 1 toe box has a very standard depth compared to Nike Dunk:
And here is a photo I took comparing the width of women’s Air Jordan 1 (on the right) to the width of Nike Dunk:
Crocs are well known for having a wide toe box area, and when you compare Air Jordan 1 width to Crocs, you can see the Jordan 1 has a more regular-sized toe box that isn’t as wide as Crocs. Here’s a comparison photo of men’s:
And here is a comparison photo of women’s:
But even though the Air Jordan 1 doesn’t have a wide toe box, don’t expect it to be narrow either. For example, when I compare it to the Nike Cortez (which is well known for running a half size small with a narrow toe-box design), you can see the toe box on the Air Jordan 1 is wider. Here is a comparison photo for men (both size 12):
And here is a comparison photo for women (both size 7):
I’ve seen some people compare the fit of Air Jordan 1 to Vans, saying they are similar. I cannot agree with this. Vans have a snug design that runs a bit smaller than normal shoe sizing. The Air Jordan 1 has a much more regular fit than Vans, especially in the toe box.
Here is men’s Vans Old Skool compared to Air Jordan 1:
And here is women’s Vans Old Skool compared to Air Jordan 1:
Air Jordan 1 has a more regular length than Vans, but the biggest difference is toe-box depth. Vans classic shoes have a very shallow toe box, and therefore the Air Jordan 1 has much more space for the toes. Here is the toe box of Vans Old Skool compared to Air Jordan 1:
Another shoe that the Air Jordan 1 sometimes gets compared to is Nike Air Force 1, and the fit of these two shoes is also bit different (especially for men). The Air Force 1 has a deeper, roomier toe box and fits a bit longer than Jordan 1 sizing.
For example, here is men’s Nike Air Force 1 compared to the width of Jordan 1:
But perhaps the biggest difference between the fit of AF1 and AJ1 is the shape of the toe box. For men, the Air Force 1 has a boxier design, that creates a bit more room for the toes. If you look below, you can see the Jordan 1 has a more slanted toe, and the Air Force 1 is boxier:
For women, however, these two shoes have a much more similar toe-box shape:
The main takeaway is expect the toe box of the Air Jordan 1 to have a regular width and a regular depth that isn’t too wide or too narrow. When you compare the AJ1 toe box to other popular shoes, you find some options that have a wider, deeper toe box, and you find some options that have a more narrow, shallow toe box.
The AJ1 finds a sort of middle ground with a regular-fitting toe box.
Air Jordan 1 Compared to Wide Shoes
Below, I took a photo of my Air Jordan 1 shoes (on the right) in regular width compared to the width of an extra wide Nike Air Monarch. This will help illustrate how wide Air Jordan 1 shoes are in regular width compared to wide-sized shoes:
The main takeaway is expect the Air Jordan 1 to have a regular width that isn’t too wide or too narrow. If you have wide feet, it may be best to size up a half size to provide extra space inside the shoe. In the next section, let’s take a look at all the sizing width photos I took so you can see more examples. All the photos below use a size 12 men’s shoe or a size 7 women’s shoe (size chart).

Nike Air Jordan 1 Width Conclusion
In my experience, Air Jordan 1 shoes have a regular width that is very comparable to the width of other types of athletic shoes. I ordered my normal sizing and they fit comfortably. However, I do not have wide feet. If you have wide feet, you may need to size up to provide more space inside the shoe.
