What Affects the New Balance XC-72 Weight?

The XC-72 is made with a suede upper and has a futuristic midsole that adds a bit of weight compared to similar options made by New Balance (see a list of other options).

There are, however, different types of New Balance shoes that are much more breathable.

For example, the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v2 shoes – when I hold them up to the window, you can actually see light passing through the material:

In the videos below, I tried to capture how flexible these XC-72 shoes are:

Shoes Similar to the New Balance XC-72

If you are interested in the New Balance XC-72 because you like retro athletic shoes shoes, New Balance actually has several options you should consider. Here’s what you need to know:

  • New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v12 – This 1080 isn’t a retro shoe, it is a running shoe, but I wanted to include it because it was the most comfortable New Balance shoe that I tried. It has that “squishy” feeling that provides comfort under the foot (show me how the 1080 responds on a foot).
  • New Balance 720 – The 720 is a low-profile retro running shoe that sits lower on the foot that many other types of New Balance shoes. Click here to see how the 720 responds on a foot.
  • New Balance 327 – The 327 has a retro running style, but the design is much different than the XC-72. The 327 has a rubber outsole that wraps up the back heel of the shoe. Click here to see how the 327 responds on a foot.
  • New Balance 237 – This New Balance shoe is inspired by 1970’s running shoes and has a traditional design. It is very comfortable to wear and has a thick foam midsole for support. Click here to see how the 237 responds on a foot.
