Recently I purchased over 30 types of New Balance shoes, including the New Balance 990v5, so I could compare them on many things, including weight. How much do New Balance 990v5 shoes weigh?

New Balance 990v5 shoes weigh 16.16 ounces (1.01 pounds) per shoe for a size 12 men’s shoe. When I tried over 30 different types of New Balance shoes, this is how the 990v5 compared to other options.

I found the average weight to be 0.89 pounds for a size 12 men’s shoe across all the 30+ New Balance shoes that I tried. This means the New Balance 990v5 weighs more than the overall average weight based on the shoes that I tried.

In this article let’s take a closer look at New Balance 990v5 weight and how it compares to other popular New Balance shoes.

The New Balance 990v5 is marketed as a running shoe, but it also fits the description of a casual athletic shoe. If you are looking for a true running shoe, I think New Balance has better options (see my favorites).

What Affects the New Balance 990v5 Weight?

The 990v5 is made with a breathable suede/mesh upper which does help keep the weight down a little bit. Here’s the material on mine:

There are, however, different types of New Balance shoes that are much more breathable.

For example, the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v2 shoes – when I hold them up to the window, you can actually see light passing through the material:

In the videos below, I tried to capture how flexible these 990v5 shoes are:

Shoes Similar to the New Balance 990v5

If you are interested in the New Balance 990v5 because you need athletic/running shoes, New Balance actually has several options you should consider. Here’s what you need to know:

  • New Balance FuelCell Rebel v2 – The FuelCell Rebel was the most lightweight New Balance shoe that I tried. The FuelCell foam midsole was extremely flexible, and provided a soft, “squishy” feeling under my foot (show me how the Rebel responds on a foot). It will be much more lightweight and flexible than the 990v5.
  • New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v12 – This 1080 shoe was the only other New Balance shoe that I felt like was just as comfortable as the Rebel shoe above. Both have that “squishy” feeling to provide comfort under the foot (show me how the 1080 responds on a foot). But the 990v5 will provide more support. • New Balance Made in USA 993 – This was actually my favorite shoe out of the entire New Balance “Made in USA” collection. I think it provides a little bit more comfort under the foot than the 990v5. To read more, visit my article about the New Balance 993 vs 990v5.
