17 Best Waterproof Insulated Jackets & Winter Rain Coat Parkas

Let me start by saying that if you are shopping for a waterproof insulated rain jacket for winter, you increase your amount of options when you also consider water-repellent winter rain jackets.

Water-repellent insulated jackets can’t take on a monsoon like a true waterproof jacket, but they are still very capable of keeping you dry during lightweight winter rain and snow showers. Our list below contains both water-resistant and waterproof winter jackets.

When buying a winter rain jacket, deciding how much coverage you need is an important first step. Do you need a drop-tail design that provides extra coverage below the waist? These types of drop-tail designs help keep weather and wind off, but they can also decrease your range of motion.

One issue with winter rain jackets, especially if you plan to use them for work, is the outer shell fabric is often made of nylon and is not extremely durable. For light-duty work, this isn’t an issue. But if you are working in rugged conditions, having a durable outer shell can be essential. This is one reason I like the Filson Shelter Cloth jacket, which uses a durable outer shell fabric that can stand up to more rugged conditions.

In this article let’s take a closer look at the best waterproof insulated jackets and coats so you can find an option that fits your needs. Let’s also discuss a few things to consider when buying these types of winter rain jackets.

5 Things to Consider When Buying Insulated Waterproof Winter Jackets

Durability

One issue with winter rain jackets, especially if you plan to use them for work, is the outer shell fabric is often made of nylon and is not extremely durable. For light-duty work, this isn’t an issue. But if you are working in rugged conditions, having a durable outer shell can be essential.

For men, the Filson Shelter Cloth jacket is your best option if you need something durable and water-resistant. For women, the Carhartt Shoreline Jacket will offer more durability, but I left it off this list because it isn’t fully insulated. If you are interested, this is where you can check it out at Carhartt.com.

Range of Motion

Large, bulky coats may keep you warm, but they can also cut down on range of motion. This can be especially troublesome for those of us working outdoors.

Winter rain jackets that have a drop-tail finish below the waist can be particularly confining, and reduce your freedom of movement. Be sure to consider this when choosing a jacket. If you need greater range of motion, a jacket that finishes near the waist may be best.

Pockets

What good is a winter insulated jacket if it doesn’t have plenty of pockets to store essentials out of the elements? Having a few reliable zip-close pockets is crucial to help keep essentials like your phone, keys, and wallet dry during a winter rain storm. I prefer to have my zip-close pockets on the inside of the jacket for extra weather protection.

Other Ways to Stay Dry

Winter insulated jackets are nice, but they may not make sense for all situations. As I said earlier, many of these jackets can be quite bulky, and for some climates, they may actually be too warm. Of course, for milder climates you have the option of just wearing a non-insulated rain jacket, or perhaps you could consider a water-repellent hoodie.

I actually like to wear the Carhartt Rain Defender Hoodies under my work jacket which not only adds extra insulation on those brutally cold days, it also adds extra protection against precipitation. To read more, visit my article about Carhartt Rain Defender Hoodies.

Coverage

How much coverage do you need for your winter rain jacket? Buying a waterproof insulated jacket that has a drop-tail design gives you extra coverage below the waist, but as we discussed earlier, a drop-tail design can also reduce your range of motion.

What does 5000mm waterproof rating mean? And what about moisture wicking? Is moisture wicking the same as waterproof?

I personally like insulated rain jackets that zip all the way to the chin. This helps keep the wind and weather off my neck. And, of course, if you’re buying a waterproof winter jacket, having an attached hood is basically a must. I prefer the hoods on my winter rain jackets to have an adjustable cord that I can tighten to keep the hood in place and keep water from leaking in.
