Why is the New Balance FuelCell Rebel so lightweight?
The New Balance FuelCell Rebel is made with a lightweight, breathable upper which helps keep the weight down:
To illustrate how breathable these shoes are, when I hold them up to the light, you can see light passing through:
This material, in combination with the foam midsole, allows the shoe to be both lightweight and flexible. In the video below, I tried to capture how flexible these shoes are:

Shoes Similar to the New Balance FuelCell Rebel
If you are interested in the New Balance FuelCell Rebel because you like an ultra-lightweight running style, there are other options you will want to consider. Here’s what you need to know:
- New Balance Fresh Foam X 1080v12 – This 1080 shoe was the only other New Balance shoe that I felt like was just as comfortable as this Rebel shoe. Both have that “squishy” feeling to provide comfort under the foot.
- New Balance Fresh Foam X 880v12 – The 880 was the third most comfortable New Balance running shoe that I tried. It is very “squishy” under the foot, but I just thought the Rebel and 1080 were slightly more comfortable.
- New Balance Fresh Foam More v3 – The Fresh Foam More offers an extra-thick midsole for even more cushioning under the foot. I did not find it to be as flexible and the Rebel.
- New Balance FuelCell Propel v3 – The Propel uses the same FuelCell foam midsole as the rebel and is another very comfortable option. In my experience, it wasn’t quite as “squishy” under the foot as the Rebel.
Overall, the New Balance Rebel is ultra lightweight and perfect if you need a lightweight, breathable running shoe. The only drawback is support. If you need something that prioritizes stability, there will be better options.
