What Affects the New Balance 840 Weight?
The 840 is made with a breathable mesh upper which helps keep the weight down. Here’s the material on mine:
There are, however, different types of New Balance shoes that are even more breathable. To illustrate how breathable these shoes are, here I am holding them up to the light:
There isn’t any light passing through.
Compare that to the New Balance FuelCell Rebel v2 shoes below, which actually show light passing through the material:
Still, you can expect the 840 to be lightweight and breathable, but it isn’t quite as breathable (or lightweight) as some other types of New Balance running shoes.
Remember, the 840 is built more for stability and support. If you want a lightweight, super-flexible running shoe, there will be better options (see my recommendations).
In the videos below, I tried to capture how flexible these shoes are:

Shoes Similar to the New Balance 840
If you are interested in the New Balance 840 because you need athletic/running shoes, New Balance actually has several options you should consider. Here’s what you need to know:
- New Balance FuelCell Rebel v2 – The FuelCell Rebel was the most lightweight New Balance shoe that I tried. The FuelCell foam midsole was extremely flexible, and provided a soft, “squishy” feeling under my foot (show me how the Rebel responds on a foot). It will be much more lightweight and flexible than the 840.
- New Balance Fresh Foam 1080v12 – This 1080 shoe was the only other New Balance shoe that I felt like was just as comfortable as the Rebel shoe above. Both have that “squishy” feeling to provide comfort under the foot (show me how the 1080 responds on a foot). But the 840 will provide more support.
- New Balance Fresh Foam 860v12 – The 860 is another good option if your prefer support. It actually weighs less than the 840, so if you are looking for lightweight support/stability, the 860 might be a nice option (show me how the 860 responds on a foot).
- New Balance 1540 – The 1540 is one of the most supportive running shoes on the market (show me how the 1540 responds on a foot). If you prioritize support/stability in your running shoes, this is an option you will want to consider. But it does weigh more than the 840 (see weight difference).
