This material, in combination with the foam midsole, allows the shoe to be both lightweight and flexible. In the videos below, I tried to capture how flexible these shoes are:

Shoes Similar to the New Balance 237
If you are interested in the New Balance 237 because you like the retro running style, there are other options you will want to consider. Here’s what you need to know:
- New Balance 720 – The 720 is very similar to the 237, but a little slimmer. It weighs 11.04 ounces per shoe for a size 12 men’s shoe, which brings it in under the New Balance 237 weight. To read more, visit my article about how the New Balance 237 compares to the 720.
- New Balance 327 – The 327 also has a retro running style, but the design is much different than the 237. It has a rubber outsole that wraps up the back heel of the shoe. But I found the 327 weight to be the same as the New Balance 237 weight (237 vs 327).
- New Balance XC-72 – The XC-72 has a retro running style, but with a modern design that New Balance describes as a “time-bending design” with an “aggressive, experimental edge.” It weighs 14.88 ounces per shoe for a size 12 men’s, which means it weighs more than the New Balance 237. - New Balance 574 – The 574 is one of New Balance’s most popular shoes and also has a sort of retro running style, but it has a more rugged outsole which makes it more versatile. The 574 weighs just a bit more than the New Balance 237. To read more, visit my article about the New Balance 574 compared to the 237.
Overall, the New Balance 237 is lightweight compared to casual shoes, but it does weigh a bit more than more modern-style running shoes that New Balance offers, like the Rebel and the Roav.
