Levi’s 501 vs 505 Jeans Compared (my Review w/ Pics)

In this article we compare Levi’s 501 vs 505 men’s jeans. One of the major differences in these jeans (there are several) is the fit in the thighs. The 505 jeans fit looser through the thighs than the 501 jeans.

The biggest difference between the 501 vs 505 jeans occurs in the thigh. The 505 jeans have a roomier thigh. Below I have my 501 jeans sitting on top of my 505 jeans. As you can see, there is more space in the 505 jeans:

And you can see that extra space in the thigh when I wear them. Below are pictures of me wearing both. Notice the thigh area in the 505 is a bit looser:

But the leg opening of the Levi 501 and 505 is very similar. Here’s what they look like:

Again, the main difference between the 501 and the 505 jeans is the 505 jeans are a bit looser through the thighs.

In this article we will take a closer look at 501 vs 505 so you can decide which pair of Levi jeans might make the most sense for you. These are two of the most iconic styles of Levi’s jeans.

What is the difference between the Levi’s 501 and 505?

The difference between the Levi’s 501 and 505 jeans is the 505 jeans have a more relaxed fit through the thighs in comparison to the 501 jeans. Both styles have a straight cut below the knee, meaning that the fit below the knee for these jeans will be very similar. Expect the 501 jeans to show a bit more shape through the hips and thighs than the 505 jeans.

Levi’s 501 vs 505 Fit

The 501 and 505 jeans do differ in fit. The 501 jeans have a regular fit through the hips and thighs with a straight leg below the knee, and the 505 jeans have a loose fit through the hips and thighs with a straight leg below the knee.

The main takeaway regarding fit is you can expect the 505 jeans to fit looser through the upper leg area. The 501 jeans are different in that although they aren’t skin tight like skinny jeans through the thighs, they won’t have baggy loose material through the thighs that the 505 jeans have.

But it is also fair to point out that although the 505 jeans have a looser fit than the 501 jeans, they (505) don’t fit extremely baggy. I would say the 505 jeans are for that person that is looking for a relaxed, loose fit, but doesn’t want something that looks sloppy.

The 501 have more of that iconic classic fit that is somewhat fitted through the thighs to show some shape, but finishes with a straight fit below the knee to take away any notion of slim/skinny jeans. The 501 jeans are for those who want a jean that shows some shape, but don’t want slim or skinny jeans. The 501 shows some shape without hugging your body like spandex.

In the picture below my 501 jeans are sitting on top of my 505 jeans. Although the colors are similar, you can see on the right that the 505 jeans are wider in the thighs and hips than the 501 jeans:

Below the knee, both of these jeans have a straight leg cut. Again, the difference in fit is going to be above the knee, not below it.

What size to order?

In my experience, both the 501 and 505 jeans have a true-to-size fit, meaning the waist and the length was what I expected. My recommendation is to stick to your normal sizing when ordering these jeans.

Leg Opening

When researching the official leg opening size, I found conflicting information for the 505 jeans. So I am just going to simply pass on what I know for sure about the pairs of jeans that I own.

My 501 and 505 jeans both have a 16″ leg opening. I found some information online that said the 505 had a slightly bigger leg opening, but that is not the case for the jeans that I own.

Here are my 501 jeans sitting on top of my 505 jeans, and as you can see, the leg opening is the same size:

The takeaway from this is, again, you can expect the straight fit below the knee on these jeans to be basically the same. It is the fit above the knee that differentiates these jeans.

In the pictures below, you can see the overall fit in the lower leg and the leg opening is quite similar:

Fly

The 501 jeans have the classic button fly, so do not expect a zip fly on the 501 jeans. The 505 jeans have a standard zip fly with a button closure.

Here is a look at the fly of the 501 (button) vs 505 (zip):

Other Options to Consider Besides the 501 and 505 Jeans

  • Levi’s 514 Classic Straight Jeans – As I mentioned earlier, in my opinion, the 514 jeans have a very similar fit in comparison to the 505 jeans. Classic straight cut that isn’t too baggy or too tight. Click here to view these jeans at Amazon (affiliate link takes you to Amazon.com).
  • Levi’s 541 Athletic-Fit Jeans – The 541 jeans combine a relaxed fit with a tailored look that gives you a shaped look without an awkwardly tight fit. Similar to the 505 jeans. Click here to view these jeans at Amazon (affiliate link takes you to Amazon.com).
