Again, the 505 and 514 jeans are very similar. In my experience, the 514 jeans have the looser fit. Here I am wearing both my 505 and 514 jeans:
As you can see, the 514 jeans have a slightly looser fit through the thighs and near the leg opening. Neither of these jeans are slim jean, and they are best for those of you who prefer a more relaxed, casual fit.
- Levis 505 Men’s Jeans – The 505 jeans are perfect for those who want a relaxed thigh without the jeans being too baggy or sloppy. We review these jeans in this article. Click here to view these jeans at Amazon (affiliate link takes you to Amazon.com).
- Levi’s 514 Classic Straight Jeans – These jeans have a traditional straight cut that isn’t too baggy or too tight. They show some shape but give your leg plenty of room to breathe. In this article we are going to focus specifically on comparing Levi’s 505 vs 514 jeans. These jeans are similar in that they both have classic straight fits that will show a bit of shape without hugging your legs like skinny jeans. Let’s take a closer look at these jeans so that you can decide which one works better for you.
What is the difference between the Levi’s 505 and 514?
The difference between the Levi’s 505 and 514 jeans is the 514 jeans have a little extra room in the thighs than the 505 jeans (but neither is a tight fit). The 505 jeans are built to sit at the waist while the 514 jeans are built to sit slightly below the waist. The 505 jeans have a 16″ leg opening and the 514 jeans have a 16.5″ leg opening.
- If you prefer more of a relaxed fit, I would go with either the 514 jeans or the 541 jeans. The 541 jeans have a relaxed, athletic cut that shows some shape but doesn’t hug the leg in anyway.
- If you prefer more of a tighter fit (not too tight), I would recommend the 505 jeans or the 501 jeans. The 501 jeans (one of Levi’s most iconic jeans) will be more fitted through the thighs than the 505 and 514 jeans, but have the straight leg below the knee to take away any notion of skinny jeans.

Levi’s 505 vs 514 Fit
The 505 and 514 are quite similar, and that is probably why you are here. If you are wanting to know the differences between the two, it comes down to these 3 basic things:
- 514 jeans have a bit more room in the thigh
- 514 jeans sit below the waist, 505 jeans sit at the waist
- 514 jeans have a wider leg opening
The 514 jeans, in my experience, do have a bit more room in the thighs than the 505 jeans, but it is important to note that neither of these jeans have a tight fit. Neither the 505 nor the 514 jeans are skinny/slim jeans.
Both of these jeans have a regular, straight cut that has a bit of breathing room through the hips and thighs. The difference in the thighs between the 505 and 514 is minimal, but noticeable (again, 514 has more room in the thighs).
It’s also worth noting that the 514 jeans are made to sit below the waist which is another reason there tends to be a little bit of extra room in comparison to the 505 jeans.

What size to order?
In my experience, both the 505 and 514 jeans have a true-to-size fit, meaning the waist and the length was what I expected. I would recommend sticking to your normal sizing when ordering these jeans.
Leg Opening
When researching the official leg opening size, I found conflicting information for the 505 jeans. So I am just going to simply pass on what I know for sure about the pairs of jeans that I own.
My 505 jeans have a 16″ leg opening and my 514 jeans have a 16.5″ leg opening. Although the difference is small, this may impact which style of jeans works better for you. For sneakers, both jeans will work, but if you plan to pair your jeans with larger work boots, then you may need the extra space.
Below is a look at how the leg opening differs between these two styles. Although there is a difference, it is somewhat minimal and may not affect which style your prefer.

514 Leg Opening
Again, the fit around the ankle is going to be pretty similar in these jeans, but the 514 does have a bit more space to pair with larger work boots due to the 16.5 inch leg opening.
Material
Both the 505 and the 514 are offered in multiple types of material. You can get both of these styles in stretch material, or 100% cotton.

Other Options to Consider Besides the 505 and 514 Jeans
- Levi’s 501 Original Jeans – As I mentioned earlier, the 501 jeans are one of (if not the most) iconic Levi jeans. They have a classic fit that isn’t too tight, but still shows some shape. Click here to view these jeans at Amazon (affiliate link takes you to Amazon.com).
- Levi’s 541 Athletic-Fit Jeans – The 541 jeans combine a relaxed fit with a tailored look that gives you a shaped look without an awkwardly tight fit. Similar to both the 505 and 514 jeans. Click here to view these jeans at Amazon (affiliate link takes you to Amazon.com).
- Levi’s 513 Men’s Jeans – The 513 jeans have a slim fit through the hips and a straight cut below the knee. These jeans will be a bit slimmer than the 505 and 514 jeans. Click here to view these jeans at Amazon (affiliate link takes you to Amazon.com).
- Signature (by Levi Strauss & Co.) Gold Label Relaxed Fit Jeans – Signature is a sort of sister company to Levi (both owned by Levi Strauss & Co.). This is their popular version of a relaxed-straight jean that fits loose in the thighs, but straight below the knee just like the 505 jeans. - Levi’s 527 Men’s Jeans – These are my go-to work jeans because the leg opening is wide enough to handle work boots. Although the 514 jeans can handle some boots, if you need jeans for work, consider the 527 jeans. Click here to view these jeans at Amazon (affiliate link takes you to Amazon.com).
