Fleece and flannel lined canvas jackets give you something that is both warm and durable enough to take on winter work. It’s becoming harder and harder to find flannel and fleece lined canvas jackets as many companies are beginning to use other types of insulation (like 3M Thinsulate) to line their jackets.
The good news is you still have several quality options, including my favorite winter work jacket, which is the Carhartt J140 flannel lined canvas jacket. I like the Carhartt J140 because not only does it have the warm flannel lining, it also uses the firm cotton duck that is both water-repellent and wind-resistant.

As I mentioned above, I love the Carhartt J140 flannel lined canvas jacket. I think the quilted-flannel lining used in the Carhartt J140 jacket is the most comfortable lining in any work jacket I have ever worn. Here’s a look at my Carhartt J140 jacket:
Even though I love the Carhartt J140 jacket, it does have an attached hood. If you don’t want an attached hood, then I would recommend either the Walls Amarillo fleece lined canvas jacket or the DRI Duck Endeavor Sherpa fleece lined jacket.
One thing you will also want to consider is the type of canvas fabric used. My Carhartt J140 jacket uses a firm cotton duck canvas, which is both water-repellent and wind-resistant. But these types of firm duck jackets can be stiff at first, and take time to break in.
If you don’t want a stiff canvas jacket, then you will want a jacket that uses a pre-washed canvas. The pre-washing process helps break in the canvas fabric, but can also make it less wind and water-resistant. So there is a bit of a tradeoff.
In this article let’s take a closer look at the flannel and fleece lined canvas jackets on this list so you can find an option that fits your needs. Let’s also discuss several things to consider when buying these types of winter work jackets.
Best Fleece & Flannel Lined Canvas Jackets for Winter
Carhartt J140 Flannel Lined Canvas Jacket
This is Carhartt’s toughest cotton outer shell fabric and one of their warmest linings (quilted flannel). It keeps me plenty warm during Kansas winters. Here’s mine:
This is the current price of this Carhartt J140 flannel lined canvas jacket available at Amazon (affiliate link takes you to Amazon.com). The J140 jacket is my favorite work jacket.
- Lining – Yes, this is a flannel lined canvas jacket. The flannel lining in this Carhartt J140 jacket is quilted, and is very soft and comfortable to wear. I have tried over 15 Carhartt jackets, and this is one of the warmest. This flannel lining is why I’ve made this jacket my go-to work jacket for many years.
- Shell – This is a firm duck canvas shell, which means it will be a bit stiff at first, but it breaks in just fine with time. This is Carhartt’s toughest cotton outer shell fabric and one of their warmest linings (quilted flannel). Overall, this is a very durable and warm winter jacket.
- Design – This jacket has a zip-front with a built-in, insulated hood. Cuffed sleeves and waist help trap in the heat. There are two internal pockets, including a zip pocket, that provide you a place to safely store essentials. In my experience, this jacket fits true to size.
- Made in the USA – This Carhartt J140 Jacket is still made in the USA. Not all Carhartt jackets are made here in the USA. If you want a list of USA work jackets, visit our article about the best work jackets made in the USA.
Carhartt does not assign temperature ratings to their jackets, which just complicates the buying process. Here is my opinion based off wearing this jacket for years: this jacket will be warm enough to handle winters in most all continental US states (yes, there may be some extreme exceptions). But it also will likely be too warm for mild winters in the southern US.

Walls Men’s Amarillo Vintage Duck Fleece Lined Canvas Jacket
If you are searching for a flannel or fleece lined canvas jacket that has a plaid lining, this Walls Amarillo Jacket will be a nice option. Walls originally began in the 1930’s as a company specializing in coveralls for the US oil industry and has transformed into one of the most dependable workwear brands on the market.
This is what the Walls Vintage Amarillo jacket looks like:

- Design – As you can see, this is not a hooded jacket. The Carhartt J140 jacket we discussed first had a built-in hood. If you prefer a collared trucker-style jacket instead, this is a nice option.
- Lining – This Walls jacket has a Buffalo plaid fleece inner lining that is warm enough to take on winter. One thing I really like about this jacket is it has insulated pockets (too many work jackets don’t have insulated pockets).
- Pre-Washed – The outer shell is a pre-washed cotton duck fabric. The benefit of a pre-washed shell is it has a more broken-in feeling on the first wear. The Carhartt J140 flannel lined canvas jacket we discussed first is not pre-washed, meaning it will be stiffer than this Walls pre-washed canvas jacket.

- Canvas Shell – The outer shell is a heavyweight 12-ounce cotton canvas duck. This canvas shell has been pre-washed to help break it in.
- Bi-Swing Back – The back of this jacket has bi-swing gusset panels for range of motion. 6 Things to Consider When Buying Flannel & Fleece Lined Canvas Jackets
Outer Shell
What type of outer shell canvas fabric do you need? Do you want a firm canvas duck fabric, or a pre-washed canvas? Here’s a look at my firm duck canvas shell:
Because firm duck can feel stiff off the rack, the pre-washing process is used to help break in the canvas fabric, so it has a worn-in feeling on the first wear. The trade-off is the firm duck usually offer more wind and water-resistance.
I’ve owned both, but prefer the firm duck. In my experience using the Carhartt J140 (which uses the firm duck), the canvas fabric breaks in after a few months and is very comfortable to wear. If you are interested in a denim shell, visit our article about the best winter denim jackets.
Inner Lining
As we have discussed throughout, there are a wide variety of lined canvas jackets on the market today. In this article we discussed fleece and flannel lined canvas jackets, but you can also find synthetic insulated work jackets and blanket lined work jackets. The options can be overwhelming. Between fleece and flannel, which is warmer?
Well, there is more that goes into the warmth of a jacket besides the lining (for example, the weight of the canvas also matters). In general, I think fleece is better at trapping heat, but both types of material are very warm. I personally like flannel, and think it has better breathability. For more options visit our article about the best winter work jackets.
Shirt Jackets
None of the options on our list are shirt jackets. If you are looking for a shirt jacket to use for more mild winter conditions, visit our article about the best lined shirt jackets for work.
Using a canvas shirt jacket gives you something that is durable but more suited to take on mild winter conditions in comparison to the heavyweight winter jackets included on this list.
Bi Swing Back
A bi swing jacket provides you with more range of motion through your shoulders and back. Most bi-swing work jackets have gusset panels on the shoulders which allow your arms to move more freely, and prevent the jacket from feeling like a straight jacket.
If you would like a bi-swing back jacket, the Carhartt Men’s Bartlett Fleece Lined Canvas Jacket on our list at the top of the page has a bi-swing back. To read about more options, visit our article about the best bi-swing back jackets.
Pockets
How many pockets do you need? Most hooded work jackets have front hand-warmer pockets, and some sort of internal chest pockets. I prefer work jackets that have a zip internal pocket that gives me a safe place to store essentials like my phone, wallet, and keys.
Here’s a look at the zip internal pocket on my Carhartt J140 flannel lined canvas jacket:
Cuffed Waist
Do you need a flannel or fleece lined canvas jacket that has a cuffed waist? Not only does a cuffed waist help trap in heat, it also makes the jacket easier to pair with a tool belt.
As you can see above, my Carhartt J140 flannel lined canvas jacket has a cuffed waist, which gives it a sort of bomber style (best Carhartt bomber jackets). But one drawback to a cuffed jacket is it doesn’t provide protection below the waist. If you want the added weather protection, a drop-tail jacket may be best.
