What Is a Double Stitch Welt in Cowboy Boots? [Western Style Pull On]

What Is a Double Stitch Welt?

A double stitch welt is a cowboy boot construction method that uses two rows of stitching around the edge of the sole to help secure the welt and create a durable connection between the boot’s upper and outsole. The welt is a strip of material, usually leather, that runs around the perimeter of the boot. A double-stitched welt is a common construction method for premium western boots.

For example, here is the double stitch welt on a pair of Lucchese boots that I own:

What Is the Purpose of a Double Stitch Welt?

A double stitch welt can serve both a functional and decorative purpose. The stitching helps secure the layers of material around the bottom of the boot, depending on how the manufacturer constructs the sole.

The welt itself plays an important role: it creates a strip of material around the boot’s perimeter that connects the upper to the sole assembly. This construction can allow a cobbler to replace a worn outsole without removing the entire upper or rebuilding the boot from scratch.

The two rows of stitching provide a distinctive appearance that many people associate with traditional cowboy boots. The parallel lines follow the shape of the sole and make the construction more noticeable. Some bootmakers use contrasting thread to emphasize the stitching, while others choose thread that closely matches the leather.

Double Stitch Welt vs. Single Stitch Welt

As the name would suggest, a double stitch welt has two rows of visible stitching around the sole, while a single stitch welt has one. Both approaches can be used in well-made cowboy boots, and neither automatically indicates superior quality.

The main difference is the appearance of the finished boot. Double stitching creates a more pronounced border around the sole, while single stitching produces a simpler look. Some Western bootmakers favor double stitching because it suits traditional cowboy boot designs.

But single stitch welt is used in many premium boots also (see example below):

Buyers should also understand that visible stitching does not always indicate how the boot is constructed internally. Some boots have decorative stitching that does not secure the structural layers. Other designs use stitching that directly contributes to the sole assembly. A manufacturer’s description or a cobbler’s inspection can help clarify the difference.

Can a Double Stitch Welt Be Recrafted?

A cowboy boot with a double stitch welt is usually suitable for recrafting, depending on its underlying construction and overall condition. Recrafting involves repairing or rebuilding parts of a boot to extend its useful life. The process can include replacing the outsole, repairing the heel, renewing the welt or addressing other worn components.

A cobbler can often replace a worn outsole on a traditionally welted boot without replacing the entire boot. The cobbler removes the old sole, examines the welt and surrounding materials, and attaches a new outsole using the appropriate construction method. The existing stitching may need to be removed and replaced during this process.

The condition of the welt determines how much work the repair requires. A welt that remains intact and securely attached may be reused. A cracked, badly worn or damaged welt may need replacement before the cobbler installs the new sole. The cobbler must also inspect the leather around the bottom of the upper to determine whether it can withstand another repair.

Repeated resoles can eventually wear down the welt or damage the surrounding leather. A skilled cobbler can sometimes rebuild these areas, but extensive damage may make the work more expensive or impractical.
