Levi’s 550 Jeans Review (How Mine Fit w/ Photos)

This is a Levi’s 550 Jeans review. I will use photos of the 550 jeans that I own. If you are shopping for relaxed Levi jeans, you actually have a lot of options. Here’s what you need to know about those options:

  • Levi’s 514 Men’s Jeans – These jeans have a classic straight cut that looks clean and professional, but won’t hug your legs tight in any area. This is one of Levi’s most popular styles, and I would recommend you check them out if you are interested in the 550 jeans.
  • Levis 501 Original Jeans – This is one of Levi’s most iconic styles. The 550 jeans are actually modeled after the 501 jeans. Expect the 501 jeans to have a straight fit that is a slimmer cut than the 550 jeans. Don’t expect the 501 jeans to be super tight, but they will show some shape.
  • Levi’s 569 Men’s Jeans – These jeans are a loose-straight fit. The 569 jeans are one of the loosest, most relaxed jeans you can buy. These jeans are baggy through the thighs, and provide a lot of room for freedom of movement.
  • Levi’s 505 Men’s Jeans – The 505 jeans are similar to the 501 jeans we discussed earlier, only they have a bit of extra room in the thighs. The 505 jeans fit falls somewhere in-between the 501 and the 550 jeans. Expect a roomy fit that does not look sloppy. Great casual jeans.
  • Levi’s 550 Men’s Jeans – The 550 jeans are styled very similarly to the iconic 501 jeans, only they have extra room in the seat and thighs. These jeans have a relaxed fit, with a leg that tapers near the ankle to show some shape. We review these jeans in this article.

In this article we will focus specifically on Levi’s 550 jeans. The 550 jeans are a relaxed fit that will not hug up against your legs in any area. This review will focus mainly on these subjects:

How Do Levi’s 550 Jeans Fit?

The 550 jeans are relaxed fit jeans that will have a loose fit in the legs. These jeans are for guys who do not like jeans that hug near the leg. These jeans are modeled after the iconic Levi 501 jeans, only these 550 jeans have extra room in both the seat and the thigh.

If you don’t like skinny/slim jeans, and want something that fits relaxed and loose, Levi actually has several options for you to choose from (to see the other options go to the bottom of the article). For now, let’s focus on the 550 jeans. Here is a look at my 550 jeans:

What Size to Order?

In my experience, these jeans have fit true-to-size, meaning both the waist size and the length fit as expected. I ordered my normal sizing. Remember, these jeans have extra space built in, so expect them to come with a loose fit.

550 Leg Opening

The 550 jeans have a relaxed fit, but the legs do taper a bit down near the ankle (meaning they get narrower as they near the leg opening). The 550 jeans have a 16.5″ leg opening. This leg opening is large enough to be paired with most all kinds of shoes. Here is a look at how the leg opening will fit with sneakers and boots:

Do Levi’s 550 jeans shrink?

In my experience, the 550 jeans have always been 100% cotton. Now, this may change in the future (or it may change depending on the color of the jeans), but although I have experienced a little bit of shrinkage in my 100% cotton 550 jeans, overall, it has been minimal.

Expect your jeans to shrink a little bit, but in my opinion, it is not enough to affect what size you order. The shrinking I have experienced is very normal in comparison to other clothes and other jeans.

Do Levi’s 550 jeans last?

My 550 jeans have held up well over time. It’s Levi, so you know you are getting a well-made pair of jeans. I personally tend to stick with Levi (especially for work jeans), but there are, of course, several other reliable brands like Lee, Wrangler, and others.

I’m always concerned about jeans wearing in the crotch or the back pocket areas, but in my experience with the 550 jeans, this has not been a problem. I also have had no issues with my zipper or button breaking or popping loose. They have held up well.

Levi’s 550 Review Summary

The Levi’s 550 jeans have a relaxed fit that won’t hug your legs. These jeans have an iconic style that is made to resemble the classic Levi 501 jeans, only the 550 jeans are made with more space in the seat and thighs.

These jeans are for guys who prefer extra space in their jeans for freedom of movement. Do not expect these jeans to be slim or skinny.

The leg tapers slightly below the knee to a 16.5″ leg opening. These jeans should pair well with most types of shoes. Shrinking can occur, but in my experience it has been minimal.

In my experience these jeans have run true-to-size. They are constructed with traditional styling. They have a zip fly and a button closure.

Levi 550 Alternatives

As I mentioned earlier in the article, if you are a guy who prefers a relaxed fit, then Levi has several options that might work for you. Here are some other options to consider besides the 550 jeans:

  • Levi’s 514 Men’s Jeans – These Levi’s have a classic straight cut that looks clean and professional, but won’t hug your legs tight in any area. This is one of Levi’s most popular styles, and I would recommend you check them out if you are interested in the 550 jeans.
  • Levi’s 569 Men’s Jeans – These jeans are a loose-straight fit. The 569 jeans are one of the loosest, most relaxed jeans you can buy. These jeans are baggy through the thighs, and provide a lot of room for freedom of movement. Your legs can breathe in these jeans.
  • Levis 501 Original Jeans – This is one of Levi’s most iconic styles. As mentioned earlier, the 550 jeans are actually modeled after the 501 jeans. Expect the 501 jeans to have a straight fit that is a slimmer cut than the 550 jeans. Don’t expect the 501 jeans to be super tight, but they will show some shape.
  • Levi’s 505 Men’s Jeans – The 505 jeans are similar to the 501 jeans we just discussed, only they have a bit of extra room in the thighs. The 505 jeans fit falls somewhere in-between the 501 and the 550. Expect a roomy fit that does not look sloppy. These are great weekend jeans in my opinion.
