What Is an R Toe in Western Boots?
An R toe is a cowboy boot toe shape with a rounded front that gradually narrows into a soft point rather than forming a full semicircle. This creates a shape and fit that resembles the rounded toe of a standard shoe. The R toe is sometimes called a roper toe because of its association with roper boots, but the R toe is also used in other types of Western footwear for both men and women.
For example, here is the R toe on a pair of western boots that I own:

Purpose of an R Toe in Cowboy Boots
An R toe is a cowboy boot toe shape with a rounded front that gradually narrows into a soft point rather than forming a full semicircle. The R toe provides a middle ground between a fully rounded toe and a more pointed Western toe.
The R toe shape also is made to resemble the toe of many everyday shoes, which makes the fit in the toe box familiar and comfortable. Still, the overall boot fit depends on the boot’s last, or the form around which the boot is constructed, rather than the toe shape alone. Two boots with an R toe can therefore fit differently depending on their width, overall construction, and sizing.
Roper boots often use an R toe alongside a lower heel and a relatively level sole. This combination creates a boot that is easy and practical to wear as an everyday boot (which is why mimicking the toe shape of a shoe is important). However, the R toe itself does not determine whether a boot is designed for riding or walking (etc.), but its familiar shape works well with casual and everyday boots.
The exact shape of an R toe can differ depending on brand. The R toe is used in both non-exotic and exotic western boots. For example, here is the R toe on a pair of ostrich boots that I own:

How Does an R Toe Compare to Other Cowboy Boot Toes?
R toe vs Round toe
An R toe differs from a full round toe because it tapers toward the tip. A full round toe maintains a more consistently curved outline across the front, often resembling a semicircle. An R toe starts with a rounded shape but narrows gradually toward the center. The distinction can be subtle, and manufacturers do not always use identical definitions for their toe styles. R toe vs Round toe:

R toe vs Almond toe
An R toe differs from an almond toe because an almond toe has a narrower, more elongated outline that resembles the shape of an almond. The almond toe sides taper more noticeably toward the tip, creating a slimmer appearance at the toe. An R toe generally retains more of the rounded character of a conventional shoe. R toe vs Almond toe:

R toe vs Snip toe
An R toe differs from a snip toe because a snip toe has a distinct pointed profile with a flattened or clipped tip. The shape creates a sharper appearance than the gradual taper of an R toe. A traditional pointed toe also narrows toward the front, but it typically ends in a more pronounced point. Snip toes are more common in traditional cowboy boots than R toe (which is more common in roper boots).

R toe vs Square toe
A square toe differs from an R toe because the square toe has a flatter, squared front. Square toes range from broad square toes to narrower square toes (cutter toes). Square toes are generally more common in cowboy boots than an R toe. R toe vs Cutter toe:

What Types of Cowboy Boots Use an R Toe?
As I discussed above, roper boots commonly are built with the R toe, and some people use the terms roper toe and R toe interchangeably. A roper boot is designed to be a boot that can comfortably be worn everyday as a casual boot, and using the R toe (which has a shape similar to a shoe toe shape) makes sense to create an everyday boot that is familiar and comfortable to wear.

However, many cowboy boots also use an R toe. Manufacturers may pair the shape with a traditional cowboy heel, a taller shaft, decorative stitching, and other Western details. The toe shape alone does not determine whether a boot is a roper or a traditional cowboy boot. Heel height, shaft design, sole construction, and the intended use all contribute to the boot’s overall style.
