This is a Levi’s 505 Jeans review. I will use photos of the 505 jeans that I own. The 505 jeans are a great casual jean that has a nice in-between fit that isn’t too tight or too baggy. If you are shopping for men’s Levi jeans, here’s what you need to know about some of their most popular options:
- Levis 501 Original Jeans – The 501 jeans are often compared to the 505 jeans. From owning both, I can tell you to expect the 501 jeans to fit a bit tighter in the thighs than the 505 jeans. This is one of Levi’s most iconic styles.
- Levi’s 514 Men’s Jeans – The 514 jeans will be a bit baggier than the 505 jeans, but still have a straight cut. This is one of Levi’s most popular styles. The 514 jeans are for guys who want a clean look, but also don’t want jeans that fit tight.
- Levi’s 513 Men’s Jeans – The 513 jeans will have a slim fit above the knee, with a straight fit below the knee. Compared to the 505 jeans, they will show more shape through the hips and thighs.
- Levi’s 550 Men’s Jeans – The 550 jeans are even more relaxed through the thighs than the 505 jeans are. If you prefer a lot of room in the seat and thigh area, then these jeans will be for you. The leg tapers near the ankle to show some shape.
- Levi’s 505 Men’s Jeans – Regular straight cut that wont hug your legs. These jeans are a popular in-between cut for those who want a fit to show some shape, but don’t want the jeans to hug their legs. We review these jeans in this article.
In this article we will focus specifically on Levi’s 505 jeans. The 505 jeans are a straight fit that does a good job also of giving you plenty of breathing room above the knee. This review will focus mainly on these subjects:

How Do Levi’s 505 Jeans Fit?
The 505 jeans are a regular-straight fit that is going to be a sort of in-between fit (not too tight or too baggy). They have a little extra room in the thighs to give them a comfortable fit.
These are great casual, weekend jeans for guys who like a pair of jeans to be relaxed, but not super baggy. These jeans give your legs room to breathe, but still show some shape. Here is a look at my 505 jeans:
As you can see, the 505 jeans don’t hug the legs like spandex. There is some room built-in which gives them a comfortable, casual feeling (but not too much to make them look sloppy).
What Size to Order?
In my experience, these jeans have fit true-to-size, meaning both the waist size and the length fit as expected. I ordered my normal sizing. Remember, these jeans have a little extra space in the thighs, so don’t expect a tight fit.
505 Leg Opening
The 505 jeans have a straight fit below the knee that falls to a 16″ leg opening. A 16″ leg opening is a standard-size leg opening for straight jeans. This means you can expect these jeans to pair well with most all types of footwear (if you have heavy-duty work boots, you might want a boot cut jean). Here is a look at how the leg opening will fit with sneakers and boots:

Do Levi’s 505 jeans shrink?
In general, yes expect a little bit of shrinkage, but not enough that it should affect what size you order. The shrinking will be very normal in comparison to other types of clothes and jeans.
Be sure also to check what type of material your 505 jeans have. Some colors are 100% cotton, while many colors are a material blend. The 100% cotton jeans might have a bit more shrinkage overall. Again, although shrinking occurs, it will be minimal and something that (in my opinion) shouldn’t affect sizing.
Do Levi’s 505 jeans last?
My 505 jeans have held up well over time. It’s Levi, so you’re confident that you are getting a well-made pair of jeans. I personally tend to stick with Levi (especially for work jeans), but there are, of course, several other reliable brands like Lee, Wrangler, and others.
I’m always concerned about jeans wearing in the crotch or the back pocket areas, but in my experience with the 505 jeans, this has not been a problem. I also have had no issues with my zipper or button breaking or popping loose.
Levi’s 505 Review Summary
The 505 jeans have a regular-straight fit. These jeans have a little extra room in the thighs for comfort, then fall to a straight fit below the knee. The leg opening size is 16 inches.
These are great casual, weekend jeans because they have a comfortable fit that doesn’t ride tight against your legs, but still show a bit of shape. They are a nice in-between fit that is not too tight or too baggy.
In my experience these jeans have run true-to-size. They are constructed with traditional styling. They have a zip fly and a button closure.
Levi 505 Alternatives
Although the 505 jeans are great casual jeans, Levi has several options to consider. Here are some other jeans to consider besides the 505 jeans:
- Levis 501 Original Jeans – The 501 jeans are often compared to the 505 jeans. From owning both, I can tell you to expect the 501 jeans to fit a bit tighter in the thighs than the 505 jeans. This is one of Levi’s most iconic styles.
- Levi’s 513 Men’s Jeans – If you want a slim cut that shows some figure, but are worried about it being too skinny, these 513’s may be the right cut for you. Slim cut waist and thighs with a straight leg opening, which gives you a tailored look without it hugging your legs like spandex.
- Levi’s 514 Men’s Jeans – The 514 jeans will be a bit baggier than the 505 jeans, but still have a straight cut. This is one of Levi’s most popular styles. The 514 jeans are for guys who want a clean look, but also don’t want jeans that fit tight.
